"Home Movie" (video, 2002)

For me, the notion of home in the contemporary context is often associated with the home movie.    The concept of home movie is often being associated with heterosexual ideology, the representation of family, a happy home. By integrating of the new technology of video which recently becoming an accessible tool, a home movie has become an easy, readily product of the dominant ideology.   It is a kind of both memory and memorial to the past, of the history of the family.    The common images of the mother cooking in the kitchen, the father washing the care, the grandparents looking after the grandchildren are no longer represented in the present context of the often now dysfunctional family (the common scene that being used in mainstream cinema).   The representation of the family is no longer presented in the now and instead become a fantasising space that functions between the real and imagine.

In this video piece, by using the personal footage (that I asked my subject to film in his private time with the family) and a kind of home movie that recorded the everyday life of my subject by myself (a third, an outside, person) as well as a fictional footage that film from the memory and the past, I replace those common images in the same sceneries of bedroom, living room in the home with an isolated, depressed, distanced, and fuse those images of the supposedly fact with fiction.      The objects and the interior of home become the obstacle to understand the relationship between the members of family.   It is when the light has become the dark, the private has become the public that the unexpected - the obscenity, homosexuality is presented to us unexpectedly.    The traditional space of home, of the old generation has encountered, without realizing, the element that once belonged to outside of home, which let us view them with the new possibility.
